Earthbone have a new EP - a collaboration with Liesbet Leroy called ‘Between Light and Shadow’!

The inspiration for Dawn Whisper (Song Thrush) started in the dead of midwinter, just outside our tiny studio here in Shropshire. For a few fleeting days, a Song Thrush perched just outside in a sycamore tree, breaking the seasonal silence with its incredibly joyful, melodic warbling. It felt like a gift. We scrambled our portable recorder and managed to capture its song before it continued its journey, and that bird became the centre of this piece. We created a soundscape of layered synths that evoked an optimistic mood, morphing and layering textures and utilising long reverbs to create slow evolving pads that blend together.
A few weeks later, we had a covering of snow, only for a couple of days - it disappeared pretty quickly. The sound of the snow melting outside of the studio was noticeably loud (possibly because everything seems to sound more intimate with an insulating covering of snow) and strangely relaxing. Maybe being inside a warm cozy studio listening to the world defrost around us added to the hygge vibes(?) - so we recorded the trickling and used this as a basis and inspiration for Twilight Hush (Snowmelt). We created a soundscape darker than Dawn Whisper, using layered sustained low-frequency tones, long piano notes with huge reverb tails, floating and blending together different drones and pads. The feel was darker, but very restful and hypnotic.
To help build a cinematic world around these recordings - something that felt like a serene, immersive tapestry, we reached out to the acclaimed Dutch flautist Liesbet Leroy. Her sensitivity and beautiful playing delivered something truly magical. We so enjoyed working with Liesbet, and found the challenge of collaborating with native flutes really rewarding, creating soundscapes that are different to what we would have created by ourselves. The title of the EP ‘Between Light and Shadow’ reflects the opposing moods of the tracks, a peaceful ambient journey where gentle nature field recordings, ethereal synths, and the soulful tones of the Native flute help you to experience the tranquility we felt while creating it. We hope the music serves as a sanctuary, a natural reset, a connection with the world around us.
